VIRTUAL EVENT: Faith Forum on Peace in the Middle East

VIRTUAL EVENT! REGISTER HERE.

Join us for a free and live virtual Conscientious Objectors’ Faith Forum on October 7 at 12 PM ET in honor of the lives lost on October 7 and since October 7.

We will be joined by people who refused to engage in the violence, inviting us to ask the question, “What does courage look like for me?” We welcome special guests from Israel and Palestine, conscientious objectors who refused to fight for Hamas and for the Israeli military, along with US veterans who became peacemakers.

> Sofia Orr: Israeli conscientious objector who refused to serve in the IDF

> Ahmed Helou: Former Hamas youth member who has lost over 80 family members to the war on Gaza

> Joy Metzler: U.S. conscientious objector and Airforce Academy graduate, 2 LT

> Diana Oestreich: Peacemaker and former U.S. war veteran

What better way to honor the lives lost on October 7th, and since October 7th, than by celebrating the courageous people who have refused to participate in the violence.  You will hear from modern day heroes for peace as they share their stories of why they choose not to participate in the escalating violence of war. And they will invite us to ask the question, “What does courage look like — for me?”

There is a rich history when it comes to conscientious objectors — people who refuse to fight in war because it violates their faith or conscience.  And in particular, Christians who follow Jesus “the Prince of Peace,” have been war resisters for centuries, going back to the earliest days of Christianity.  Let’s take a moment to remember all the lives lost to war and rededicate ourselves to peace.  Violence only begets more violence.  We will not build a better world by killing each other’s children.

This virtual event is sponsored by Red Letter Christians — and it is FREE and open to everyone.

RLC Revival!

Location: Santa Ana, Southern California

Red Letter Revivals stand in direct contrast to the Christian nationalism we know to be on display during the ongoing election cycle and to demonstrate to the country that there is a growing movement of Christians who want love, peace, justice, and nonviolence to be at the core of our policies on war, immigration, guns, healthcare, racial justice, the death penalty, and more. Join the Red Letter Christians movement for these transformative, high-energy, open to the public Revivals as we shape the very culture of Christianity in our country to have Christ’s love at its core. This is a mechanism for movement building – bringing together faith and nonprofit leaders, activists, pastors, thought leaders, artists, musicians, and those impacted by injustice. The long-term objective is to break down silos, connect leaders with creative solutions to the challenges of injustice, and sow the seeds of collaboration for years to come. We can’t wait to meet you!

Beating Guns: Hope for People Who are Weary of Violence

Location: Our Lady of Angels Convent - 609 S. Convent Rd. Aston, PA 19014 (next to Neumann University)

REGISTER HERE (in-person or virtual)

Gun violence is a public health crisis. It is also a spiritual and moral crisis. God changes hearts, but people change laws.

The biblical prophets Micah and Isaiah imagine a world where God’s people beat their swords into plows and their spears into pruning hooks, building a world free of violence. Come hear Shane Claiborne speak about his community's work transforming hearts, laws and guns - turning tools of death into garden tools and other instruments of life!

Another World is Possible, Beating Guns @ University of Pennsylvania

Location: The Philadelphia Episcopal Cathedral - 19 S 38th St, Philadelphia, PA 19104

REGISTER HERE

The Biblical prophets Isaiah and Micah speak of a time where people will “beat their swords into plows and their spears into pruning hooks” – it is a vision of a world where we turn from war to peace, and transform tools of death into tools of life.  More than a decade ago, Shane began taking this literally, turning donated guns into garden tools as part of a national movement called “RAWtools” (which gets its name from flipping “WAR” around).  This event will involve a blacksmithing demonstration with the forge and anvil, where participants will be able to take the hammer and beat on the barrel of a gun.The program will feature a presentation on gun violence by Shane, a live blacksmith demonstration transforming a gun into a garden tool, music from Common Hymnal, and guest speaker Reverend Sharon Risher - daughter and cousin to three victims of the Emanuel 9 murdered by a white supremacist at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina. There will be a variety of other local organizations who will invite people to take concrete actions to address gun violence in Philadelphia and around the country. Find more information here.
